In the beginning of the 19th century women were expected to dress for men with little regard for themselves. For example women always wore dresses and other clothes that were not very convenient to wear, such crinolines or more commonly referred to as hoop skirts. Coco Chanel, a French fashion designer, began to change the societal “norm” of what to wear, as well as gaining the title of an iconic fashion designer. She revolutionized women clothing, she made it so women were not dressing for men anymore; now they were dressing for themselves. It was the post war period of WWI, when more women were beginning to become involved in the work place, that she began to liberate women from being trapped in a corset and encouraged a casual but elegant range of clothes. I think that she is a leader because she turned the previous world of women’s fashion into something that allowed women to stop dressing for men and start dressing in a more comfortable and professional style that fit women’s new role in the professional community.
